Full of confidence after last week’s great performance, Ashford 3’s lined up against a strong Herne Bay 1st team. Herne Bay were currently 4th in the league so it was going to be a tough game.
Ashford started strongly and controlled the game fairly well throughout the pitch. There were some good passages of play from Ashford, with Kate and Dee holding the middle, some great 1, 2’s with lots of support, but unfortunately after 15 minutes Herne Bay had a break away. The quick counter attack led to a 3 on 2 situation with Ashford’s defence and unfortunately led to a goal to the away team. This was against the run of play as Serena, Orissa and Imogen had been solid in defence. Halftime score 1-0 to Herne Bay.
The second half was a very even game, with both teams threatening the oppositions goal. Herne Bay were mainly dangerous on the counter attack with Ashford building play well from the back and through the midfield. Molly did a great job connecting the defence and the mid, Caroline, Heidi, Lottie, and Ginny kept the ball well, and made some great passes out wide. Tilly was really unlucky with a one-on-one with the keeper after making a great lead run. Linda had a strong shot from the only short corner of the game, but sadly it was straight at the keeper. Herne Bay had a few good shots on goal but man of the match Tamsin made some great saves and kept the score at 1. Ashford continue to press right until the end, Linda taking a shot from a tight angle and watching it go agonisingly wide, just slightly too far ahead of Imogen who was making a great run at the far post. Final score, 1-0 to Herne Bay, not the result Ashford were hoping for, but a great team performance against a strong opposition. Ashford will take the confidence from the last two weeks into the final game of the season.
