Ashford welcomed BBHC to the fortress this weekend looking to solidify 3rd place in the league against a side who were rock bottom with only 1 point all season.

As the game started it became clear that BBHC had not come to "park the bus" as they attempted to go toe to toe with the home side. Early pressure from Ashford resulted in some good turnovers but unfortunately nothing came of it as balls flashed across the D aimlessly multiple times. BBHC did have some early success in getting up the pitch and forced Ashford keeper Duir Forrest into a smart early save with what would turn out to be their only shot on target in the half.

After 17 minutes the score was still 0-0 and Ashford were edgy, 2 drag flicks were the best chances until this point, Luke Wicken putting one wide and the other straight at the keeper. The pressure did eventually tell though as Chris Smith scored a drag flick into the top right hand corner on a re-awarded penalty corner after Wicken had been fouled as he danced his way through the defence.

Shortly after, Ashford had a wonderful goal disallowed for no reason at all. Kiagh Bridges flicked the ball to Tom Lightfoot in the area, who let the ball bounce and smashed it into the corner just above backboard height. At first the umpire claimed the ball had not gone in the goal, clearly the strike too fast to be seen by the naked eye. Eventually after being informed otherwise, he disallowed the goal for "dangerous play". Lightfoot's self-proclaimed "Worldie" did not stand. Would his goal a game streak come to an end here?

Ashford took the game away from BBHC with two further goals in the latter stages of the first half, Jack Manning-Press crowning a lovely passing move and Robin Miller slotting home from close range.

BBHC had to be admired as they continued to try and find a way through but only made it into the Ashford circle one further time in the half, the resulting shot going well wide.

The second half was all one way traffic with the odd counter attack from BBHC. In amongst the action Wicken scored a hat-trick. A well taken first was the highlight, beating two men and flicking into the roof to finish.

Robin Miller got his second of the game, Chris Smith scored a second drag flick and Tom Lightfoot got in on the act, gleefully reminding everyone afterwards that his goal a game streak continued in a squealing voice witnesses assumed was usually reserved for communicating with man's best friend.

There was still drama to be had as Ashford searched for a tenth goal, Wicken got a card for hitting the fence with his stick in frustration after a 2 vs the goal keeper where a team mate opted to shoot wide rather than passing for an empty goal tap in.

A ten-man Ashford side kept the sheet clean and once Wicken was back on more drama ensued. A lovely passage of play down the right saw Lightfoot released into the circle, his shot at goal was hampered by a shove in the back from a defender. The goalkeeper had to dive and make the save but could only push the ball to Wicken one yard from the goal, he controlled and was about to score when the keeper deliberately took him out from behind, jumping into his back with no attempt to play the ball.

A yellow card and the most certain penalty stroke you ever did see? No, the umpire looked to the sky as if only a deity could possibly have seen it. What about the umpire at the other end, 50+ yards away? He did see it and after a quick word over the microphones the conclusion was a free out, the reason....the keeper jumped into the player causing him to put the ball off the baseline. Ashford were incredulous, how often does a team have the chance to score 10!

Still, in the end it didn’t matter. A 9-0 victory and 3rd place in the table with one game to go.
