Ashford Mens 2 XI travelled the short distance for the derby game against Canterbury 4th Xi for a fresh winters Saturday 3:15 push back. The side welcomed back Ian “Casper” Fraser from a short spell in the 1st XI and the mood felt upbeat, warm up completed by PC plod, Ashford took to the game with excitement for the first 10
minutes before moments of madness struck ; once, twice, three times a disaster, certainly no glowing rainbows thus far. Ashford hit half time feeling a tad down in the dumps but an excellent team talk from player coach fox and an Alex Ferguson esq idea from Fraser ; Ashford started the second half with a new lease of life. Some excellent hockey across the whole pitch, the back line of the ever reliable man mountain Viking Austen between the posts, skipper George of the jungle ever the brute, PC Barrett strong as an ox, the boyband duo of Jago and Seb retaining possession and stringing some well directed balls into the midfield of Davis, Fraser, Rainbow McLeod and Deeks, things were certainly starting to look promising. The duck quacked and Fraser ran through into the Canterbury D un spooked before cooly flicking it past the keeper into the net - 3:1 Canterbury, the game was on! Clever runs and 3D skills by Jude the dude, pace from Michael Taylor, chess like moves from Ben Shep and ever classy coach Foxy sent the Canterbury back line into a spin and it wasn’t long before a Davis drag flick made it 3:2 ; we dozed off for a short while and Canterbury found the net twice more making it 5-2 with 25 minutes to go ; a further Davis drag flick goal followed by a Foxy bit of class saw it 5-4 with 15 minutes to go - suddenly tragedy struck, Canterbury’s young Italian footballer forward appeared to be snipered out of no where by a stray bullet, he rolled the width of the pitch in what appeared agony and by some bizarre turn of events Davis was sinbinned for 10 minutes followed by his fellow bash brother Barrett warming the sin bin bench and with ashford down to 9 players, it was some how 5-5 from rainbow Lewis McLeod goal, no sound of the Canterbury crowd cheering the team on anymore and with 5 minutes to spare Ashford nearly took all of the glory - The AHC train chugs on with a feel good fantastic never say die attitude, a brilliant Saturday afternoon with Casper the friendly ghost taking the man of the match glory- this is certainly a feeling that won’t be replicated in many clubs across the lands and 1 we are all enjoying being part of.
