This week saw a mens 3s side looking for a good start to 2023. Despite several good performances in 2022 goals had been limited and therefore results and points hard to come by.
This week saw Holcombe visit the fortress. Knowing that the game would be physical Ashford started well. Soaking up some early pressure with ‘Man of the Match’ James Chamberlain making many timely tackles and interceptions. Daryl Fox also made sharp early saves on his debut for the 3s.
Following a swift move involving ‘lucky shorts’ Sam Hunt and energetic Michael Wood Ashford forced a short corner. Andy Hill stepped up to dispatch the ball into the bottom right of the goal.
Ashford then had a spell of pressure and created several further chances but failed to convert any to consolidate their lead. After a rousing team talk from veteran skipper Nathan Morris Ashford raced into the second half but again the second goal eluded them with both Cameron Montford and Adam Mott going close.
Holcombe then started to create chances and would have equalised had it not been for further fine saves from Fox and interceptions from Chamberlain. As time ticked away an Ashford youngster skilfully ran down the clock, despite immense frustration from the opposition, to seal the win.
A great win and good start to 2023.
