Ashford welcomed Folkestone to the fortress for a tough game which was watched by a healthy number of supporters. The opening play was tense, a lot of back and forth, end to end hockey providing endless thrills for the crowd. Folkestone were first to strike, slotting an opportunity away in open play.
Robin Miller took advantage of the Folkestone defensive frailties down the left hand side of the pitch, tearing along the baseline to smartly set Tom Lightfoot for a deflection in to the net. Granted the goal was not as glorious has his deflection vs Folkestone in the first half of the season however we were all happy to be on level footing by the time the end of the first half came.
The second half of play provided more end-to-end thrills with Ashford keeper Duir smothering many opportunities, in spite of this Folkestone were able to create a few short corner opportunities. With one of their corners, the ball was valiantly charged down by Riki Johnston & the ball was pinballed to the Folkestone circle in a matter of seconds. Like an uno reverse card Ashford now had a short corner.
Chris Smith took the opportunity to fizz the ball into the side netting putting Ashford ahead leaving Folkestone with a tough challenge in the last 15 minutes. Unfortunately, they took this challenge by the horns and with, yet another counter Folkestone were able to beat the keeper at the front post with a rocketing reverse shot to equalise. Ashford had a similar opportunity through Luke Wicken immediately after this however the ball clattered the post instead of the back of the net and with that the final whistle blew. A tough result to take on the chin however Ashford look forward to next week playing top of the table.
