With a full squad at the first home league game of the season, the 5s had a blustery but bright day to play Tunbridge Wells. Straight from the pushback, Ashford looked the more dominant team with the more youthful midfield (just about, on average). The only thing saving TW was their goalkeeper who was playing at a very high standard and we gave him plenty of practice. Pressing high most of the first 15 minutes, the only time Ashford were caught out was on a long ball counter-attack. The Steel Wall of Hugh and Steve picked the ball out of the D each time and a goal didn't look like happening for TW.
In the 16th minute, Neil H playing higher than usual, hit the ball in for his first team goal which couldn't have come sooner. Further forays into the D looked fraught as at one point, it looked like Roger might get knocked on the head samurai sword style from a downward hit in mid air. Fortunately this was justly awarded with a free hit.
With a few substitutions 10 minutes before half time, Ashford held on and were rewarded a 2nd goal with around 5 minutes to go, by Sam Makin.
While still continuing to attack afterwards, the whistle blew for half time.
The 2nd half saw many attacks on the TW goal but against an extremely athletic keeper, we were blocked each time. Even the infamous Lightfoot Lob attempted a few times, could only achieve a crossbar. However, Roger was justly rewarded after 47 minutes with a cleanly struck hit from a PC.
TW battled hard and made some valiant attempts, but were deflected or kept out of the D, and the goal during PCs, when it mattered. The few drives towards goal were well covered and cleared by keeper, Adam. Ashford kept most of the possession on the day and the team play showed through. Good performances all around from the juniors Nathan, Sam, Tom, Oscar and Thomas, and the umpires for a fluid game.
Special mention for Sam Taylor on his senior debut, making brave tackles, good attacks and winning a PC. He also got voted Player of the Match.
